Short Story - 800 Words
An hour later, his leather jacket and helmet stowed with his motorbike, Phenix dropped from the twenty-foot high rammed earth wall of the temple where Kalyssandra and the monks lived, landing like a sleek shadow on the ground. He crouched low, using the heavy shrubs as cover to scan the temple perched precariously close to the natural ridgeline of the peak. There was no need for the security of a wall to cover the rear, as an intruder would need a mode of flight to gain entrance. As for mortals, the elements and an unequivocal death resulting from a plunge to the jagged ravines below acted as a good deterrent. Even in the soft sable lighting, he could see the garden was a magnificent recreation and miniaturization of the larger naturalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Past a lotus pond ringed with weeping willows, the leaves within kissing breath of the inky waters. He crossed an arched covered bridge spanning the pond to the far side of which stood a pavilion. In the shadows of one of several crimson stone columns holding the heavy wood and stone roof aloft, he listened and adopting the stealth of a hunting cat, he slipped through a pair of red-lacquered lattice doors. A tall dark spirit screen used to deflect ghosts and unwanted spirits from entering the room faced him. Phenix angled his head, first checked left then right before walking toward the end of the screen to peer into the interior of the large room, lit within from the soft yellow glow of a row of candles sitting in small bronze dishes atop a stone altar overlooked by a statue of Buddha. With the certainty of knowing he was not alone, Phenix crossed the black flagstones to pause beside one of the many red lacquered wood columns dotted throughout the room. ââ¬Å"I know you are there,â⬠he said to a deep shadowed corner, using the principal dialect of the region. A resigned sigh floated out of the darkness followed by the soft susurration of cloth moving. ââ¬Å"I congratulate you on your stealth, stranger,â⬠a soft tenor voice answered. From out behind the shelter of the altar, a tall figure cloaked in darkness stepped. ââ¬Å"However, you insult our hospitality by not entering through the front door of our home; therefore I offer no apologies for the welcome.â⬠ââ¬Å"It is not yourShow MoreRelatedshort story1018 Words à |à 5 Pagesï » ¿Short Stories:à à Characteristics â⬠¢Shortà - Can usually be read in one sitting. â⬠¢Concise:à à Information offered in the story is relevant to the tale being told.à à This is unlike a novel, where the story can diverge from the main plot â⬠¢Usually tries to leave behind aà single impressionà or effect.à à Usually, though not always built around one character, place, idea, or act. â⬠¢Because they are concise, writers depend on the reader bringingà personal experiencesà andà prior knowledgeà to the story. Essay about Revelation - 1744 Words
quot;Revelation, n. A famous book in which St. John the Divine concealed all that he knew. The revealing is done by the commentators, who know nothing.quot;1 The book of Revelation, the only apocalypse among the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, has always occupied a marginal role within the field of Biblical interpretation. Its bizarre visions of beasts, dragons, plagues, and cataclysms have inspired poets and artists while confounding more traditionally minded scholars for centuries. England in the early seventeenth century proved an exception to this rule. The flowering of apocalyptic exegesis in this period among academic circles bestowed a new respectability on the book of Revelation as a literal roadmap of church historyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Although these later scholars cited Luther as an important figure in church history, they did not acknowledge (or realize) any methodological debt to him; adopting a mode of interpretation outlined by Luther, they redirected these ideas towards a scheme which was Calvinist in its hope for worldly improvement. The phrase quot;Calvinist millenarian, quot; upon further examination, joins two sets of seemingly incompatible ideas without explaining the origins of this odd combination. Calvin himself expressed little interest in either history or eschatology. William M. Lamont has noticed that like St. Augustine, Calvin quot;viewed the Apocalypse with detachment: it had a circumscribed, allegorical significance, and that was all. Calvin remained wedded to a view of God as, in all significant things, Unknowable.quot;2 He concerned himself more with personal salvation than with the salvation of the world, and his sparse and unsystematic views on history tended to look for progressive improvement rather than rapid upheaval. Calvin spoke in terms of a quot;zeal for daily progressquot; among the community, and his followers expanded his ideas to encompass the betterment of a much larger group. quot;Indeed, despite Calvins Augustinian avoidance of historically oriented eschatology, quot; writes Robin B ruce Barnes, quot;the hint of progressivism in his thoughtShow MoreRelatedRevelation Of Revelation And Revelation1920 Words à |à 8 PagesRevelation. Critical Issues Concerning Deforestation and Its Environmental Effects Free Essays
Over half of the worldsâ⬠forests have already been destroyed if the rate of deforestation is not reduced, the forests will suffer even more damage. Imagine this; every minute twenty-six hectares (estimated) of the forest are destroyed, this is equal to thirty-seven football fields. The forest is not only the home to some of the most important species on earth, but it also helps control the climate and makes the planet able for us to live in. We will write a custom essay sample on Critical Issues Concerning Deforestation and Its Environmental Effects or any similar topic only for you Order Now The expanding human population has cleared many of the trees, once covering much of the earth, a long time ago. Agriculture took a toll early of the landscape, and now the once great forests are reduced to tiny pockets scattered throughout the earth. Recently is when the tropical forests have become under severe attack of deforestation. Only seven hundred of the original one and a half billion hectares of the rain forest remain. At the turn of the twentieth century there was twice as much rain forest as there is today. Causes of deforestation include; commercial logging, clearance for agriculture, roads and railways, forest fires, mining and drilling, fuelwood, and clearing land for living are just some of the main reasons, of which we have not found the worst culprit. The two most common found reasons for deforestation are shifting cultivation and commercial logging. The problem starts when the soil becomes less fertile from animals grazing and walking repeatedly over the small land space. This not the threat to the forest however, the threat is when the land is not allowed enough time to recover and causes soil degradation. Felling of trees for charcoal, and clearing trees for mining and the extraction of oil are other factors leading to deforestation, but are not considered as damaging as shifting cultivation and commercial logging. Nonetheless they are still a threat to the existence of the rain forest. When trees are cleared the topsoil erodes in just one decade, of which it took thousands of years to accumulate. The land is now unusable and can lead to disastrous flooding since there is no soil to soak up the rain. The most disastrous effect of deforestation is the effect it has on the earthâ⬠s climate. The greenhouse effect and global warming is caused by the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere mainly. The amount of carbon dioxide would be greatly affected by the destruction of the rain forest; this would lead to a build up in the atmosphere and in result would increase climate change. Most of the burnt or rotting trees release even more carbon dioxide. Scientists believe that only a small fraction of the plants and animals that live in the rain forests have been identified, and of these are believed to hold the cures for some of the most deadly diseases, such as cancer and aids. An obvious solution would be for us to quit cutting down trees altogether, but there is no way we could do that. Forest management plans are being used all over the world, putting sustainability as the emphasis. These plans allow logging to take place by putting into the earth what we take out. These plans are carried out so that logging can be done with the least enduring effects taking place to the earth. Some parts of the rain forests, which are labeled as too sensitive for even well managed logging, are restricted as protected areas. These protected areas along with the help of enforced legislation, can be an effective defense against the many problems that affect the rain forests. The most important step in stopping the process of deforestation is to inform and educate the people whose actions either directly or indirectly create a problem for the rain forests. Developed countries and their consumers have to realize the devastating impacts on the forests from which the products cause that they buy. By doing this will be the only way we can stop the deforestation process and maybe eventually reverse it and the rain forests will flourish. Analysis The Character Larry In The Short Story ââ¬Å"My Oedipus Complexâ⬠By Frank Oââ¬â¢Connor My Oedipus Complex is a short story of Frank Oââ¬â¢Connor about a little boy ââ¬â the main character Larry ââ¬â who told about his relationship and his complicated feelings around the relationship in family. One important technique that made the readers have a closer look to this character was the technique of narration. In the story, the narrator was the main character, a five year- old boy; therefore; every event was told under the boyââ¬â¢s eyes. Through that, the character of Larry was depicted clearly. He was not a boy didnââ¬â¢t know anything but he also didnââ¬â¢t know all, he loved the person take care him and he fight against the person take place him in his motherââ¬â¢s love and attention. In order to have close look to this character, first of all, we should discuss about ââ¬Å"the most peaceful periodâ⬠in his life which was the time before the coming back of his father from the First World War. With this child, he didnââ¬â¢t know about the awful of war. He also didnââ¬â¢t know the important of father in family, lack of father in the early life is the unlucky with any child, but he didnââ¬â¢t know about that. The reason is that he was too young, the war took his father up to the age of 5 year olds and in the wartime, every man must go to war so he couldnââ¬â¢t see the role of father in other families. The memories of him about his father was few, he found that his father liked Santa Clause. This comparison can make readers surprising; however, itââ¬â¢ was rather true because father ââ¬Å"came and went mysteriouslyâ⬠. The readers may smile in the first moment reading it but after that, they would be sympathy with the boyââ¬â¢s situation. Living in a house only have him and his mother, he found himself have responsibilities with the daily routine. Without father in home, Larry became an accompany friend of his mother to everywhere she went. ââ¬Å"What mother and I should do during the dayâ⬠and ââ¬Å"what steps should be taken to brighten the homeâ⬠, these thought must belong to the person not only wanted his mother take care him but also wanted take care his mother. That might be the character of a person wasnââ¬â¢t passive, didnââ¬â¢t only get surrounding peopleââ¬â¢s care. He was also an imaginative boy, he called his left leg was Mrs Left and his right leg was Mrs Right. Maybe in the boyââ¬â¢s world only have him and his mother ââ¬â a female person and he felt familiar with his mother than everyone else soà he called them was ââ¬ËMrsââ¬â¢. This call expressed his character in some extend. With two legs, he had Mrs Right more demonstrative than Mrs Left and let them discuss about the problems of the day. Why did he build Mrs Right and Mrs Left? Maybe, the desert of sharing feelings of him was very big and it was not enough to share his feelings with only his mother. And, children still do something what adults may think stupidly as some little girls like talking with dolls. However, that Larry created the conversation between Mrs Right and Mrs Left was the clever initiative, which not all children can do. According to Kobus, ââ¬Å"Although Larry seemed happy; he did not really have the opportunity to interact with other children his ow n age. It seems that in order for Larry to cope with his problems and boredom he would often resort to visiting with Mrs. Left and Mrs. Rightâ⬠. Besides, the boy was the childish boy. Pretty naive is another character of him like every other child. He compared the Geneysââ¬â¢ baby to a cheap baby. He didnââ¬â¢t know the mother couldnââ¬â¢t have baby with herself alone, she needed his father. The little knowledge of him was not the thing to discuss because every child was. However, the important thing was that the boy looked everything and told his story with the childish eyes, with the boyââ¬â¢s eyes. He always expressed what he thought and that is the character of this child. His inner feelings were rich. The boyââ¬â¢s daily routine wasnââ¬â¢t only some acts like getting up, going into motherââ¬â¢s room, having breakfast, and going with mother but he also spent a little time to enjoy natural surrounding through his window. The boy wasnââ¬â¢t passive, he not only expressed his feelings about surrounding he also described surrounding. He lived close with nature. The evidence is that he compared himself ââ¬Å"like the sun, ready to illumine and rejoiceâ⬠. This comparison in some extend expressed his optimistic and through this comparison the readers felt the peaceful life of him and the important role of him to surrounding people. A boy was used to living without having father with the daily routine because for a long time, the father was in war and the boy never saw father much. What happen when the father return? Of course, the life was mixed up the boy had some changes in his life which caused his complicated feelings. He disliked his mother talking to his father and found him like ââ¬Å"boring visitorâ⬠. In other words he was not only unfamiliar with his father but also jealous with his father. The boy found unfamiliar with father in the way he put off a uniform whichà he usual in when he met before; in the way he came in to dinner that before only had Larry and Mother. Moreover, he was jealous when mother take time she usual with him for his father. She spent time in talking with his father, ââ¬Å"looked anxiousâ⬠when talking with his father. The boy told that he ââ¬Å"disliked her looking anxious, because it destroyed her good looksâ⬠. Maybe, he was unfamiliar with this image of mother, too. According to Larry, he only saw his mother with care about him, with sweet voice. Being the person not passive, the boy always interrupted his father and his mother. He wanted to notice motherââ¬â¢s attention. In this way, there was a conflict between him and his father to win motherââ¬â¢s care. Sometimes, the readers may think the boy did exaggerate the conflict between him and father, but the conflict between them deeper and deeper meant that there was no compromise between them. Maybe the father also liked the boy because he was unfamiliar with having boy in the relationship between him and Larryââ¬â¢s mother and every change must have time to solve. Maybe, the father was also childlike, he was also jealous the boy, too. With any reason, the conflict between father and son was attractive with readers and through it, the readers understood more about children like Larry. In the state of jealous mood, some children can act with little conscience, but Larry was different. He observed every action surrounding cleverly and sensitively. Larry could recognize changes on his mother anxious. Moreover, he always noticed the motherââ¬â¢s voice to estimate motherââ¬â¢s feelings and attitude. At the first time when he interrupted his parents, when mother said ââ¬Å"gentlyâ⬠he realized immediately she usually said gently when having boring visitor so he continued interrupting. The misunderstanding of the boy was unavoidable because he and his parents had never gathered around before but it showed his logic thought. And when mother said ââ¬Å"impatientlyâ⬠, he disappointed and he thought that God was misunderstanding his prayers. This thought express another character of Larry, he always wanted to explain why something happen to him. And in another time, at the tea time, when mother said ââ¬Å"impatientlyâ⬠with him, he also explained: â⠬Å"It was clear that she either genuinely liked taking to father than talking to me, or else that he had some terrible hold on her which made her afraid to admit the truth.â⬠Overall, these were the childish explanations of a little boy. A child, although he had to try express himself in front of people, he was till a child. He found the way his fatherà put paper down and told his mother something new of it at the tea time was a foul play, not fare with him. In his mind, he thought the struggling for motherââ¬â¢s attention between him and father was ââ¬Å"man for manâ⬠. He had not only little individual in the character, he also selfish and stubborn. He always wanted mother belong to only him like before the returning of the father. Sharing motherââ¬â¢s care with father made him uneasy. He wanted the peaceful time with mother again therefore he wanted God sent Daddy back to the war. In this case, he did not only explain the fact, he found solution for the fact. However, when understanding the fact, father would not back to the war he explained based on God again. He thought ââ¬Å"God wasnââ¬â¢t quite what he was cracked up to beâ⬠. And some sweet words from mother couldnââ¬â¢t make him decrease his stubborn. He still interrupted parents, woke father from sleeping in the morning, even giving him several kicks. After the coming back of his father, he till continued doing some daily habits like before such as wake up at the usual hour, invent conversation between Mrs Right and Mrs Left, enjoy nature surrounding, and climbed the big bed. However, there were some differences in these familiar actions. Firstly, he didnââ¬â¢t feel like the sun when waking up any more, he felt like a bottle of champagne. This comparison expresses his feelings ready to burn and want to share his love. Secondly, the conversation between Mrs Right and Mrs Left was long and about father and son relationship. In the conversation, he expressed the hope on the Mrs Rightââ¬â¢s talk; he wanted to send father to the right place. Thirdly, he also looked at surrounding nature but it seemed faster than before. Lastly, he came into Motherâ â¬â¢s room but he couldnââ¬â¢t talk to mother much like before, mother always wanted him quiet. These changes have caused the changes of his role with his mother. With his jealous and selfish, he did his habits in some differences. The selfishness and stubbornness of Larry was bigger and bigger. He called parents was that pair: ââ¬Å"The way that pair went on smothering my early morning schemes-was like burying a family from the cradleâ⬠. He shouted with his mother. Event, he bawled with his father: ââ¬Å"Shut up, youâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Snack your ownâ⬠. In normally, the boy told these words with parents was the bad boy. However, when looking at a 5 year-old boy in his situation we will think different. The returning of father was extremely strange with him. My mother only told him pray for the safety come back of father but she didnââ¬â¢t tell the reason. Moreover, when the fatherà took him for a walk, he though everything would be improved but the father had some action made him disappointed. He didnââ¬â¢t tolerate with his sonââ¬â¢s feelings. Everything happened after that only made him more disappointed. Father scolded at him but he did not think that father taught him, he still thoug ht father liked a visitor. Mother always answered him when he asked; she didnââ¬â¢t explain for him anything. I think it is true with the father said ââ¬Å"I see heââ¬â¢s better fed than taughtâ⬠. After receiving failure with many trying to have motherââ¬â¢s care, he ââ¬Å"made a point of dropping into their bedroom and nosing aroundâ⬠so parents wouldnââ¬â¢t know. And the clever child realized an important thing but he didnââ¬â¢t named: ââ¬Å"It seemed to depend on being grown ââ¬â up and giving people rings, and I realised Iââ¬â¢d have to waitâ⬠. And with the childish thought he decided solve the problem like the thing he was beat. He said with his mother: ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to married youâ⬠. He couldnââ¬â¢t have awareness about what he said; he only thought simply that that way he could win motherââ¬â¢s love. Larry is, a little boy, similar to Oedipus ââ¬â a character in an old Greek legend who kills a man without knowing that the man was his fathe r and married the manââ¬â¢s wife without knowing that she was his mother fight with his father to win motherââ¬â¢s love with the hope that: ââ¬Å"one day fatherââ¬â¢s hold on her would be brokenâ⬠; and he wanted to marry with his mother to have all her love. He was not crazy with that thought because he was too young, he didnââ¬â¢t understand everything and these childish thought were logic in the look of a boy. Having a new member, Sony, was another change happened in Larryââ¬â¢s family and this change affected not only Larry but also his father. In accidentally, the change solved the conflict between father and son. Larry was still selfish as he was. Before the returning of father, he did want to have a baby to brighten his home. However, now, his family had one more member, he disliked him with the same reason as he did have with father because Sony took too much time of his mother. And he had a solemn warning with his father: ââ¬Å"If another bloody baby comes into this house, Iââ¬â¢m going outâ⬠. This clever action of Larry made father quite nice to him. In new situation, Larry became understanding the father more. The father was kicked out the big bed and Larry tolerate with him. Larry said ââ¬Å"There! There!â⬠to comfort the father. This action express Larryââ¬â¢s grow-up, he know tolerated with his father and know how to comfort him in the sense of his thinking. In generally, Larry was a child had rich inner feelings andà individuality. He was not only active, sensible, responsible, and clever but also selfish, stubborn, and jealous. Particularly, childish character was expressed in each sentence in the story. Through the Larry character, the readers understand more about the relationship in family, the relationship between the children and parents. The story in some extend also showed the awful of war. The war separated the members in family, made them strangely.
